Abstract:
This dataset corresponds to a next day map of snow and ice cover over Canada and its surrounding territories. The map is produced by blending three already validation snow and ice cover maps provided by NOAA, NASA and Natural Resources Canada. These maps have already been individually shown to have similar agreement with in-situ snow course data provided by the Meteorological Service of Canada. Nominally, the 500m resolution MODIS snow cover daily composite is mapped. However, NOAA 4km resolution maps are used to fill gaps due to the presence of clouds within that composite.
Purpose:
This map is intended for scientific applications requiring timely information on snow cover presence at relatively high spatial resolution and validated against Canadian in-situ snow course data sets. The restriction to a binary snow/no-snow classification will result in a decrease in agreement (~80%) with field snow course data during the melt period with higher agreement (~90%) outside this period. However, at least half of this disagreement is traceable to random errors that will tend to cancel out when the data set is aggregated spatially. The residual errors are land cover dependent typically. Users who wish to use this snow cover information to drive other models should take this error structure into consideration. This map should not be used for operational water resource assessments without some form of local cross-validation.

The processing of the Daily Snow Cover Map (500 meter) are in a Java program that is envelope of C++, Fortran and Java classes and includes following steps: 1. Java scheduled task to pull MODIS (MOD10A1) and NOAA (GOES/SSM-I) daily snow cover products. 2. Create Canada wide MOD10A1 mosaic (Sinusoidal projection) 3. Create a Canada wide blended map (500 meter) from MOD10A1 mosaic and NOAA (GOES/SSM-I) in Sinusoidal projection. 4. Reprojection to standard Lambert Conformal Conic projection. 5. Generating reduced color geotiff image. 6. Compressing (via gzip) and archiving all data.
